The federal government is currently holding a public consultation on the Digital Economy <http://de-en.gc.ca/consultation-paper/> . It invites,
“views on the goals of a Canadian digital economy strategy, the concrete steps needed to reach these goals and how governments, the private and not-for-profit sectors can best collaborate to create a strategy for future success.”
The specific themes mentioned in the consultation document are:
Innovation using digital technologies
Digital infrastructure
Growing the ICT industry
Canada’s digital content
Building digital skills
In response, the Identity Privacy and Security Institute (IPSI) at the University of Toronto is convening a roundtable discussion to collaboratively prepare a "consensus" submission well in advance of the July 9 deadline.
Our consultation mainly targets scholars and experts in information and communication technology (ICT) policy, broadly conceived, but is open to anyone with an active interest in this field. A key requirement from all is the willingness to collaborate on crafting a written submission that can enjoy wide support.
Participation
We invite two forms of participation in this roundtable process:
1. Contribute to the on-line public facing consultation wiki IPSI2010.pbworks.com <http://IPSI2010.pbworks.com> before the Roundtable event. The primary contributions will be policy recommendations, but rationales for these recommendations, pointers to useful background resources, and comments on prior contributions can also be valuable.
2. Attend the Roundtable event to be held Monday June 14, 9:00-12:30 at the University of Toronto. The work will mainly be done in small break-out groups focusing on specific consultation themes and draw initially on the contributions already posted to the wiki.
We strongly encourage participating in both the on-line wiki discussion and the face to face Roundtable. Contributions to the wiki can be made without having to attend the Roundtable in person. Attendance at the Roundtable event will be limited to 40.
In either case, participants will need to register for the wiki. To register to participate, send an email to Karen Smith providing your name, position, institutional affiliation (for identification purposes only) and contact information. Once registered, you'll be able to join the wiki and edit. Your name, position and affiliation will be visible on the public facing wiki. We will use your provided contact information for communication but it will not appear on the public site.
A separate registration on the wiki is required for the June 14 Roundtable - if you are interested in attending, please visit the Roundtable sign up page: http://ipsi2010.pbworks.com/Roundtable-event-sign-up More information is also available on our Process page http://ipsi2010.pbworks.com/Process describing how to participate.
Event Date: Monday, June 14th, 2010
Time: 9:00-12:30 (+12:30-1:30 optional lunch)
