Job: Assistant/Associate Professor, Surveillance Studies, Queen's University

 

The Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University invites applications for a Tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Surveillance Studies with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2020. In the case of an exceptional candidate, a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor would be considered.

The position will further strengthen and strategically develop Queen’s international leadership role in Surveillance Studies scholarship; consolidate and expand the Surveillance Studies Centre’s outreach activities; and contribute to the expansion of Surveillance Studies at Queen’s through teaching and graduate supervision. The successful candidate will become a member of an academic team and will be expected to play an intellectual leadership role in the Surveillance Studies Centre (SSC), secure funding for collaborative research projects, and undertake management tasks. They will also be committed to related activities such as pursuing data rights, policy development or other public engagement. Candidates from groups which have not been historically at the centre of Surveillance Studies are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant group of scholars who have pioneered and pursued Surveillance Studies for more than two decades. The SSC investigates all kinds of surveillance, whether seen in the origins and impacts of particular technologies such as biometrics, drones or CCTV or in processes such as social sorting, smart cities or chilling effects. The SSC possesses a critical, ethical and human-centred stance, working alongside those in privacy protection, civil liberties and human rights. The position is open to applicants from any relevant field of study in the social sciences, humanities and beyond. As a multi-disciplinary unit, the SSC has good relationships with business, computing, law, engineering and health studies, among others. Applicants should have demonstrable competence in their chosen area and strong interest and experience in interdisciplinary research. An international outlook and desire to foster research relationships around the world is a further asset. 

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree completed at the start date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are academic and teaching excellence. Experience of research leadership is an asset. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of related programs. Candidates must provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment. The successful candidate will also be expected to make contributions through service to the department, the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
